A freelance visa in Dubai starts with a permit from a free zone authority or from MoHRE, and you work in your own name. A free zone permit can include your own residence visa. The MoHRE permit suits people who already hold residence, and it is the base for the five-year Green Visa.

Freelance visa questions

A question about your own case? Send it on WhatsApp and an advisor answers it directly.

Ask on WhatsApp

Is a freelance visa legal in the UAE?

Yes. A freelance permit from a free zone authority or MoHRE is a legal basis to work for yourself, and your residence visa can rest on it. Your work has to stay within the permit’s named activity.

What are the requirements for a freelance visa in Dubai?

A passport and an activity the issuer licenses for freelancers, usually shown with a portfolio or a qualification. The residence visa on the permit then needs a medical test and health insurance.

Can I freelance on my spouse’s visa in Dubai?

Yes. Some free zones let you take a freelance permit and keep your visa with your sponsor’s no-objection letter, or move your residence onto the permit.

What is the difference between a freelance permit and a freelance visa?

The permit is your licence to work for yourself in a named activity. The visa is the residence that can rest on it, and it carries its own Emirates ID.

Can I get a freelance permit from MoHRE in Dubai?

Yes. MoHRE issues freelance permits to people who work on their own with no employer, including residents on a self-sponsored visa such as a Golden Visa. It is also the permit behind the Green Visa.

How much does a freelance visa cost in Dubai?

It depends on the issuer, the permit term, and the visa parts: the medical test, Emirates ID and health insurance. A 15-minute call compares the permits that cover your work.

Can a freelance permit holder hire staff?

A free zone freelance permit names you as a sole practitioner. Some allow no staff or extra visas, so a first hire may mean moving to a company licence, which we plan before you outgrow the permit.

What is the Green Visa for freelancers in Dubai?

A five-year residence with no sponsor. It needs a MoHRE freelance permit, a degree or specialised diploma, and self-employed income of at least AED 360,000 a year over the two preceding years, or proof of solvency.
