Key takeaways
- The UAE Golden Visa for business owners comes through the company. It rests on a share worth AED 2 million or more, AED 250,000 a year in federal tax, or the entrepreneur route.
- Your licence brings an investor or partner visa first, so you can live and work here while the company builds towards the 10-year permit.
- The authorities judge the file on audited accounts, the company bank statement and tax records. How the company is set up and kept decides the outcome.
Can a business owner get a Golden Visa?
Yes, and the company is usually how it happens. Owning a licence does not qualify you on its own. What qualifies you is something the company proves: the value of your share in it, the tax it pays or the revenue it earns.
That is why the order matters. A founder who sets up with the Golden Visa in mind structures the capital, shareholding and bank account differently. Changing it later means amending the memorandum of association and waiting for accounts that show the new position.
What your company gives you first
As the owner of a UAE company, you can hold a residence visa on that company. It is called an investor visa or a partner visa, depending on the structure. It lets you live here, sponsor your family and run the business.
The visa is tied to the licence. Renew the company on time and the visa renews with it.
Between this and the Golden Visa sits the Green visa, a five-year residence that GDRFA Dubai issues to partners and investors without an employer as sponsor. Some owners hold it while the company grows. Our comparison of the Golden Visa and the investor visa sets the two side by side.
Golden Visa routes for business owners
Four routes run through a company you own, and a fifth sits beside it. The figures are eligibility thresholds set by the authorities.
| Route | What qualifies | What the authority reads |
|---|---|---|
| Company capital or partner share | Your share in a UAE company worth AED 2 million or more, paid from your own funds | An audited financial report, the licence with its list of partners and the company bank statement |
| Federal tax paid | A company paying AED 250,000 or more a year in federal taxes, or your share of that amount | A Federal Tax Authority letter confirming the payments and your partnership |
| Entrepreneur on revenue | A UAE small or medium business in an approved field with annual revenue of AED 1 million or more | Revenue shown in the company’s own accounts |
| Entrepreneur on a venture or exit | A project approved by an accredited incubator or authority, or past ventures sold for AED 7 million or more in total | The approval or nomination, or proof of the sale |
| Property beside the company | UAE property worth AED 2 million or more in your name, including bank-financed property | The land department’s valuation of the property |
The capital route is the one most founders can plan for at setup. ICP requires the invested capital to be fully owned by the investor. Borrowed money does not count, and the source of the funds has to be documented.
The tax route suits companies that are already established. The Federal Tax Authority confirms the taxes paid, and a partner can rely on their share of the total.
In Dubai the entrepreneur route starts with a nomination from the Dubai Future Foundation, which comes before GDRFA looks at the file. Property follows its own rules, set out in our guide to the property route.
Does company setup give a Golden Visa?
Not by itself. A standard setup gives you the investor or partner visa described above. A Golden Visa through company setup happens when the company is built to meet one of the routes. That decision is best made before the licence is issued.
Three situations come up most often.
Capital you already have
A founder with AED 2 million of their own funds can set the company up so the share capital, bank account and audited report all show it. Each document has to match the others, because the authority reads them together.
Revenue still to come
An operating business heading for AED 1 million a year usually starts on the investor visa. The entrepreneur route opens once the accounts show the revenue, so clean bookkeeping from the first month is what makes that year count.
Property alongside the business
Some owners qualify through property they hold personally while the company runs beside it. The two files are separate. The company structure can then follow the business itself, with the visa resting on the property.
What decides your route
Where your money sits comes first. Funds already in the UAE, funds coming from abroad and funds tied up in property point to different routes. Whichever you use, the source has to be documented.
Then the business itself. For the entrepreneur route its activity has to fall in an approved field. Its clients decide whether a mainland licence or a free zone company fits. Both can qualify. For the capital route GDRFA reads a free zone certificate showing the capital and your share. On the mainland, the DET licence with its partners’ list does the same job.
Partners change the arithmetic. The capital test is applied to each person’s share, so two founders splitting a AED 2 million company would each fall short on capital alone.
Timing and family come last. If your spouse and children need residence this year, the investor visa covers them now, and the Golden Visa can follow when the company qualifies.
Keeping the company and visa in good standing
A Golden Visa that rests on your company is only as strong as the company’s records. The authority reads the bank statement, the audited financial report and the tax registration, and the permit is extended only while the same conditions are met.
That is where the rest of the setup earns its place. A working corporate bank account is the first proof that the capital is real. Corporate tax registration applies to every UAE company, and VAT registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 a year.
Bookkeeping kept to audit standard turns revenue into evidence. Through our PRO services, the licence, the investor visa and family visas renew on one calendar.
Company and residency as one plan
We often meet founders who have the means to qualify and a company that does not show it.
We plan the company and the residency together. Before anything is filed, a senior advisor reads your funds, your business and your family plans against each route. The structure, capital and shareholding are then set so your route is supported from the first document.
We handle the company formation in the UAE, the investor visa and the bank account, and prepare the Golden Visa file once the company qualifies. The full routes and UAE Golden Visa requirements are on our Golden Visa page.
