A used car trading company in Dubai buys and resells pre-owned vehicles under a DET or free zone trade licence. Selling to UAE residents from a yard or showroom usually points to the mainland, and export-only trading is often run from a free zone. Each sale or export then goes through the RTA, with the car's fines cleared first.

What sits on a car trading licence

If the car is never yours, you are selling on commission, and that needs its own activity on the licence before the first consignment arrives.
Showroom or export desk
Where the buyer sits points to the route, and the yard or showroom usually confirms it.
| If most of your clients are | Likely route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| UAE residents buying from your yard or showroom | Mainland (DET) | A retail showroom outside a free zone is licensed by DET |
| Buyers abroad, with cars shipped out | Free zone | Export-only trading is commonly free zone based, and each car still clears the RTA |
| Local buyers and export buyers together | Either route | Mainland covers local sales directly; a free zone company would add a DET branch |
A free zone company can sell to mainland buyers through a DET branch licence or permit (Executive Council Resolution 11 of 2025). Mainland income can affect QFZP status, so the sales mix matters.

Who a car trader answers to
DET or the free zone authority issues the trade licence. After that, the RTA is involved car by car: ownership transfers, technical inspection where it applies, and the certificate a car needs before it leaves Dubai.

What the bank asks a car trader
Bank viewCloser look at cash, third-party payments and buyer countries
Each car is a high-value item, and the money around it can arrive in cash, from third parties or from buyers abroad. That mix draws closer questions, even though car trading sits outside the DNFBP list. Banks usually ask how buyers pay and which countries the export proceeds come from. We set out the sales channels, the payment methods and the buyer countries in the account file before it goes in.
AMLNot a DNFBP activity; the bank's own customer checks still apply.
Where car trading files slip
Export wording, then local sales
A company licensed for export only takes a good offer from a buyer in Dubai. That sale sits outside its activity, and fixing it later means an amendment or a DET branch.
Stock bought with fines still attached
A car with unpaid fines or dues cannot be transferred until they are cleared. Traders buying in bulk sometimes find this out at the transfer stage, with a buyer already waiting.
Reconditioning without a workshop activity
Light repairs before resale feel like part of trading. Workshop work is a separate activity, so doing it from the yard without that activity listed puts the business outside its licence.
